About the Course

The Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) strand under the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Track in the K-12 Curriculum prepares students for careers in welding, metal fabrication, and structural engineering. This program follows TESDA competency standards, allowing students to earn National Certifications (NC I & NC II), which qualify them for employment in the construction, shipbuilding, automotive, and manufacturing industries or for entrepreneurship in welding services.

Program Objectives

Welding Fundamentals

Understanding welding tools, materials, and safety protocols

Basic and Advanced SMAW Techniques Practicing different welding positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead)

Metal Cutting and Fabrication

Learning oxy-acetylene cutting, grinding, and shaping techniques

Blueprint Reading & Welding Symbols Interpreting engineering drawings and industry-standard welding symbols

Senior High School students who graduated with SMAW, may have the opportunity to get assessed and obtain a National Competency Certificate by TESDA, or continue with the college education.

Structural and Pipe Welding

Gaining skills in assembling and welding pipelines and structural components

Preventive Maintenance & Inspection Ensuring weld quality through testing and troubleshooting

Entrepreneurship in Welding

Preparing students for self-employment or running a welding business

Program Facilities

The Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Training Room is a specialized facility designed to provide hands-on training in shielded metal arc welding processes. This facility is upgraded also to future migration of Shielded Metal Arc Welding to Manual Metal Arc Welding.  The training room is equipped with industry-standard welding equipment, safety gear, and materials, allowing students to gain practical experience and develop the skills needed to succeed in the welding industry.

The SMAW/MMAW Training Room provides students with:

  • Hands-on experience with industry-standard welding equipment and processes.

  • Expert instruction from experienced welding professionals.

  • Opportunities for national competency certification in shielded metal arc welding.

  • Enhanced job prospects and career advancement opportunities in the welding industry.

Grade 10 completer (from public and private JHS)
